Abstract

It is common in the first years of Elementary School, the phase of acquisition of writing, for children to have difficulties in carrying out segmentation properly and, if this issue is not resolved in spelling studies in the initial years, it can be carried over to the final years of Education. Fundamental and causing several losses to the student throughout their school and social life, starting from the perspective of language as a mechanism of communication and social prestige. This field study, bibliographic, descriptive, qualitative and quantitative, has the general objective of verifying the occurrence of non-conventional segmentation in texts produced by students in the sixth year of Elementary School. In order to achieve this objective, the following specific objectives were outlined: identify the non-conventional segmentation processes present in texts written by sixth-year students; carry out a study on hyper and hyposegmentation; and categorize the relationships between lexical word and grammatical word that are most recurrent in the non-conventional segmentations found in students’ textual productions. The study was carried out in a public schoolin São José de Ribamar – MA, in a sixth year class in which the researcher is a Portuguese language teacher. The activities were proposed on a regular school day, in accordance with the content previously planned for the class, with a view to not altering the students’ routine and not causing pedagogical harm. The present study adopts as its theoretical basis the studies carried out by linguists such as Cagliari (1998), Morais (2008), Bisol (2005), Câmara Júnior (2017), Collischonn (2005) and Brandão (2015).
