This article is a bibliographic research whose object is literacy in the perspective of human formation and, therefore, is based on the assumptions of Historical-Cultural Psychology. It aims to analyze the contributions of Historical-Cultural Psychology to the field of literacy and is based on the studies of Martins (2013); Dangió and Martins (2018); Martins and Marsiglia (2015); Galvão, Lavoura and Martins (2019). We show that, for Historical-Cultural Psychology, literacy is a vector for the promotion of human formation as it promotes an intentional and systematic teaching, in addition to the decoding and coding of graphic symbols, enabling the expansion of higher psychic functions and, therefore, contributing to the development of the human psyche.
